Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Puerto Maldonado – Transfer Upper Tambopata River
This day you will start taking a flight to Puerto Maldonado, arriving at mid-day, your guide will meet you at the airport, and together you will be transferred to your first lodge located near the upper Tambopata River, arriving around 14:30. Once we arrive at our lodge, the personnel will accommodate you in your room. you will have a traditional Amazonian lunch. In the afternoon you will have a guided walk to the Amazon rainforest. A thirty-minute walk takes us to a 35-meter-tall observation tower, which will add a whole new dimension to our Amazon bird photography experience: the forest canopy. From this vantage point, it is all about landscapes and mainly birds.
Blue-and-Yellow Macaw, Chestnut-fronted Macaw, and toucans are seen flying against the horizon. Other birds include: Paradise Tanager, Green-and-gold Tanager, Flame-crested Tanager, Turquoise Tanager, Opal-rumped Tanager, and others. The tower also offers good opportunities for Cream-colored Woodpecker, Gilded Barbet, Plum-throated Cotinga, and Striolated Puffbird. We might see lonely raptors. Then, we will return to our lodge for dinner and a well-deserved rest.

Tambopata Birding Psittaciformes Tour
Day 2: Macaws Clay Licks – Birding Full Day, trails, and rainforest.
This morning, we will wake up very early to have our birding adventure traveling by boat upstream river and visiting two best places in the Amazon rainforest to admire beautiful birds, the Chuncho Clay Lick and the 8 Gallinas Clay Lick. In this places, hundreds of macaws and parrots gather each day to feed on minerals. After a brief walk (~5 minutes) we will have the chance to see dozens of large macaws feeding on the special sodium-rich clays of the riverbank. The Macaws clay lick probably attracts more large macaws than any other clay lick in the world and the sight of dozens of macaws taking flight is truly unforgettable.
Possible psittacines to see are: Red and Green Macaw, Red-bellied Macaw, Yellow-crowned Parrot, Dusky-billed Parrot, Amazonian Parrotlet, Orange-cheeked Parrot, Scarlet Macaw, Blue-and-yellow Macaw, Blue-headed Parrot, Chestnut-fronted Macaw & Mealy Parrot.
We will spend the morning watching the multicolored spectacle created by the flocks of birds. Then, we will return to the lodge to have a delicious lunch and prepare for our next activity, we will explore the forest through a trail, looking for species of the lowlands. Birds include: Chestnut-eared, Lettered, Emerald, Curl-crested aracaries, and Brown-banded Puffbird. walking very close to the river we can reach a point from we can watch the sunset.

Day 3: Return to Puerto Maldonado, transfer to Madre de Dios River lodge
We will continue our search for more parrots and other rainforest birds. After breakfast, we will return to Puerto Maldonado. We will board the boat to leave the lodge, continue by car, and once again take a boat at the main port on the Madre de Dios River, to reach our next lodge on the banks of the river. This interesting and comfortable lodge will provide us with easy access for our next day’s adventure at Lake Sandoval, the main attraction of the Tambopata National Reserve. At the lodge, we will enjoy a delicious lunch before departing for the canopy walkway to look for canopy birds.

Birding Tambopata: Parrots and Tropical Birds
Day 4: Birding expedition to the Tambopata National Reserve, visit to the famous Lake Sandoval
The day begins with having a delicious breakfast and being transferred to the Tambopata National Reserve, we will walk 3 kilometers exploring the trail while we head to the spectacular Sandoval Lake. We will try to spot Pale-vented Pigeons, Purple Gallinule, Slender-billed and Snail Kites, Rufescent Tiger-Heron, Sungrebe, Green Ibis, Horned Screamer Ringed kingfishers, Amazon kingfishers, American pigmy kingfisher, Red capped cardinal, Barred Antshrike, Short-tailed Pygmy-Tyrant, Streaked Flycatcher, Boat-billed Flycatcher, Gray-fronted Dove, Ruddy Ground-Dove and others and you must see the hoatzin.
Arriving at the entrance of the canal we will take a canoe tour and reach this spectacular lake. Lake Sandoval has rich vegetation of palm groves and grasslands. After lunch we’ll rest for an hour before exploring the west side of the lake. Our boat is quiet and allows us to get close to and carefully observe the wildlife on the lake.
Psittaciformes Tour Tambopata Birding
We will continue to our next lodge within the Sandoval area. Some nice birds to see here are the Rufous-backed Antbird, Amazonian Motmot, Rufous Casiornis, Sulphur bellied Tyrant-Manakin, Black-faced Cotinga and Pearl-bellied Tyrant. Along the way, we will make a couple of stops to observe mixed flocks, the White-eyed Parrots Blue-headed Parrot and many other birds.

During our walk, we can see some more birds like motmots, nun birds, trogons, pigeons, guans, and have a good opportunity to observe different species of monkeys including the most common species – the Capuchin. We will go to the trails to look for owls such as Screech owls, Crested owls, to spot-light Pauraque, Tawny-bellied Screech-Owl, Great Potoo, Long-tailed Potoo, Ocellated Poorwill, and if we are lucky a Mottled Owl or Crested Owl. There is also the possibility of taking macro shoots of American Bullfrogs, Horned Frog, tree frogs, and other creatures of the night and much more.

Day 5: Paradise Lodge, visit to Native Village, Local Farm & Nocturnal Activities.
On the fifth day of the tour, participants will engage in a visit to local communities. First, we will pack our things and start our walk back to the reserve entrance. Our boat will be waiting at the river port to take us to Paradise Lodge. After settling into our cabins, we will embark on a private boat excursion to a local farm that boasts an abundance of local fruits. Subsequently, we will visit a native village of a small Matsiguenga family that will warmly welcome us and share their culture. During our time together, you will experience their ancestral customs and have the opportunity to support them by purchasing some of their handmade products. In the late afternoon, we will take a nighttime walk at the lodge to spot owls and other nocturnal species.
Birds possible to see include Ornate hawk eagle, Slate-colored hawk, White-winged Becard, Short-tailed Nighthawk, King vulture, Olive Oropendola, Scaled pigeon, Gray-headed tanager, Brazilian Tinamou, White-crested Spadebill, Hoatzin, Greater Any, Red Bellied Macaw, Amazonian Streak Antwren, White Throated Tinamou, Bare Necked Fruitcrow, Agami Heron, Rufescent Tiger Heron, Lineated Woodpecker, Black Capped Donacobious, Wattled Jacana, Grey Necked Wood Rail and many more.

Day 6: Visit Parrot Clay lick and Night river wildlife viewing
On this day, very early our boat will be waiting at the river port of the lodge to transfer us to the Cachuela Parrot Clay lick, the species we can see here are: Cobalt-winged parakeet, Rose-fronted parakeet, Blue-headed, Orange-cheeked Mealy and Yellow-crowned Parrots, White-eyed and Dusky-headed Parakeet. After the show concludes, we will enjoy breakfast on the boat. Following that, we will return to the lodge, where we’ll have one more opportunity to observe wildlife, including birds, turtles, monkeys, and caimans along the riverbank. After lunch at the lodge, we can take some time to relax or enjoy the facilities and the beautiful surroundings. As night falls, we will embark on a boat tour along the Madre de Dios River, allowing us to spot caimans and discover fascinating nocturnal wildlife.

Day 7: Birding morning and transfer to Puerto Maldonado airport
Today after a delicious breakfast you will be transferred to Puerto Maldonado. It is worth to spend a morning before the flight looking for White-throated and Purus Jacamar Red-breasted Blackbird, and savanna birds such as Brazilian Teal, Southern Lapwing, Point-tailed Palmcreeper and Red-bellied Macaw. At 10:30 am you will be transferred to the airport from where you can take your flight to Lima and connections. B. L.
