This tour takes you to an adventure to find the birds specialties of the Amazon. One of the rarest birds in the Amazon rainforest is the Black-faced Cotinga. This bird is found in the eastern part of the Amazon and is known for its black plumage. It is a very shy bird and is often seen hiding in the understory of the forest. Other rare birds that can be found in the Amazon include the White-bellied Seedeater and the Black-tailed Tityra.

Itinerary
Day 1: Lima – Puerto Maldonado – Sandoval Lake Lodge
Your birding journey begins with a flight to Puerto Maldonado. Upon your arrival, your guide will welcome you at the airport and assist with your transfer to our headquarters for re-packing. Afterward, we will proceed to Sandoval Lake Lodge, where we will have the opportunity to explore the lush grounds and the beautiful surroundings of the lake. Overnight at Sandoval Lake Lodge.
Day 2: Sandoval Lake Lodge
Today, we will explore one of the most stunning oxbow lakes in the region, Sandoval Lake. In the morning and afternoon, we will embark on a leisurely exploration of the lake’s enchanting surroundings from the comfort of a catamaran. Remain vigilant for playful monkeys and the majestic Giant River Otters, two of the lake’s most captivating inhabitants. You may also spot an array of vibrant bird species, including the stunning Hoatzin, the elegant Capped Heron, and the striking Green Ibis. A night visit to the lake is an absolute highlight, offering a unique perspective on its nocturnal wonders. immersed in the beauty of this remarkable setting.
Day 3: Sandoval Lake Lodge – Puerto Maldonado
Early morning birding will provide us with an opportunity to observe dozens of macaws and parrots visiting the lush palm patches. Before heading back to Puerto Maldonado, we will spend some time on the lake and trails, immersing ourselves in this incredible morning spectacle. The afternoon is yours to enjoy at your leisure, giving you time to explore the town of Puerto Maldonado. You’ll spend the night in a hotel, allowing you to experience the vibrant local culture of this jungle city.

Day 4: Puerto Maldonado – Filadelfia – Macaw Clay Lick
Early morning departure by car of aprox. 1 hour and 20-minute to Filadelfia port. From there, we’ll board our boat for a 40-minute upstream journey to the magnificent Macaw clay lick. Here, you’ll witness numerous macaws, parrots, and parakeets gathering in the treetops, waiting for the perfect moment to swoop down and perch on the riverbank cliffs to feast on clay, an essential part of their diet every morning.
After this unforgettable experience, we’ll head to our next lodge for our final day in the jungle. Enjoy a delicious lunch before we set off to observe canopy birds from a 35-meter observation tower, offering breathtaking views of the Amazon. Throughout the day, we will explore the trails in search of more avian species, including guans, pigeons, and possibly howler monkeys, as well as the chance to see toucans or raptors soaring overhead.
Day 5: Birding morning and transfer to Puerto Maldonado airport
After enjoying a delicious breakfast today, we will pack our belongings and prepare for our journey back to the city. We’ll retrace our route along the river and road back to Puerto Maldonado. Once we arrive, we will transfer you to the airport for your flight to Lima and any connecting flights.
