Itinerary

Day 1Lima – Pucusana – Pantanos de Villa

We’ll meet at 5 a.m. at your hotel in Lima. Our day starts before sunrise as we drive south along the Pan-American Highway toward Pucusana, a picturesque harbor village alive with fishing boats and seabirds. From here, we board a local boat to navigate around rocky islands where Humboldt Penguins, Peruvian Boobies, and Inca Terns nest in spectacular numbers. South American sea lions often bask nearby, adding a vibrant touch to the coastal scenery.

After the boat excursion, we continue birding along beaches and cliffs that shelter species such as Surfbird, Gray Gull, American Oystercatcher, and Peruvian Seaside Cinclodes, a species restricted to the Peruvian and Chilean coast.

Following lunch (picnic or local restaurant), we return north to explore Pantanos de Villa, a UNESCO-listed Ramsar Site at the southern edge of Lima. The wetlands’ open lagoons and reed-fringed trails provide excellent views of White-tufted Grebe, Great Grebe, Puna Ibis, Gray-hooded Gull, and the dazzling Many-colored Rush Tyrant, one of Peru’s most striking small birds.

By late afternoon, we conclude our adventure and return to your hotel after a rewarding day surrounded by the coastal birds of Peru.

This was an amazing birding day near Lima! Our guide was very knowledgeable and helped us spot so many species — from the cute Humboldt Penguins in Pucusana to colorful Many-colored Rush Tyrants at Pantanos de Villa. The boat trip was safe and relaxing, and we even saw sea lions close to the cliffs. It was incredible to see such rich wildlife only a short drive from the city. Perfect tour for anyone who loves nature and photography!
