Our journey begins in the picturesque town of Ollantaytambo, a historically rich area known for its remarkable Incan architecture and terraced hillsides. Here, we’ll not only marvel at the ruins but also set out on guided birdwatching excursions. We’ll continue along the Málaga Pass, where we’ll spot a wide variety of species unique to the Andean ecosystem. From the striking Andean condor soaring overhead to the colorful sunbirds flitting through the lush vegetation, each moment promises to be a treasure for bird enthusiasts.
As we continue to Machu Picchu, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, we’ll discover the intricate relationship between the site’s incredible history and the surrounding natural environment. Itinerary
Day 1: Birding Huacarpay and San Salvador Lake
Our guide and driver will pick you up from your hotel for a morning departure and transfer from Cusco to Huacarpay lake, you will start the birding activity along with your guide and later you will continue to San Salvador a perfect place to observe water birds and passerines. Night at Urubamba Lodge.
Targets: Blue-and-yellow Tanager, Rusty, Black-throated Flowerpiercer, Bearded Mountaineer, White-tufted Grebe, Yellow-Billed, Puna and Cinnamon Teals, Yellow-billed Pintail, Ruddy Duck, Cinereous Harrier, Black-chested Buzzard-Eagle, Variable Hawk, Plumbeous Rail, Puna Ibis, Andean Coot, Andean Lapwing, Andean Gull, Andean Flicker, Andean Negrito,the impressive Giant Hummingbird, Sparkling Violetear, Black tailed and Green-tailed Trainbearer, the endemic Rusty-fronted Canastero, Streak-fronted Thornbird, Wren-like Rushbird, Many-colored Rush Tyrant, White-crested Elaenia, Yellow-billed Tit-Tyrant, White-browed Chat-Tyrant, Rufous-naped and Spot-billed Ground-Tyrants, Greenish Yellow-Finch, Peruvian sierra-Finch, Mourning sierra-Finch, Golden-billed Saltator, Yellow-winged Blackbird, Hooded Siskin, Andean Goose, Crested Duck, Silvery Grebe, Black-faced Ibis and Giant Coot, Creamy-crested Spinetail and Chestnut-breasted Mountain-Finch.
Day 2: Urubamba – Sacred Valley
ascending to Acjanaco Pass (altitude: 3,600 meters / 11,800 feet). Birding stops on the way to observe high-altitude species. Descend to the cloud forest area (altitude: around 2,000 meters / 6,600 feet) Arrive at the lodge in the cloud forest. We will have a well deserved lunch and overnight at our confortable lodge to spend the first night.

Day 3: Humid Forest Specialties
Today you will start exploring trails and lookout points in search of endemic and rare bird species. Enjoy the diverse birdlife of the cloud forest ecosystem. Return to the lodge for lunch and dinner in the night. Overnight stay at the cloud forest lodge.

Day 4: Abra Malaga Pass, Polylepis Forest – Ollantaytambo
Start the day with a delicious breakfast, and then continue the journey along the Abra Malaga, birding through this excellent road making stops at different altitudes for unique birding opportunities. Reach the thastayoc conservation area at an altitude of 4300 m. this hike is the good to spot the Royal cinclodes and more excellent birds only found in this zone. In the afternoon we will continue to Ollantaytambo to have a delicious dinner and well desserved rest.

Day 5: Ollantaytambo – Aguas Calientes
Enjoy a delicious breakfast, after continuing the trip to the Aguas Calientes town. birding through this excellent road making stops at different altitudes for unique birding opportunities. Reach the thastayoc conservation area at an altitude of 4300 m. this hike is the good to spot the Royal cinclodes and more excellent birds only found in this zone. In the afternoon we will continue to Ollantaytambo to have a delicious dinner and well desserved rest.

Day 6: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco
