Amazon Birds Birding Tambopata

The Amazon rainforest is an important habitat for many bird species. It provides them with a place to find food, shelter, and mate. The rainforest also helps to regulate the local climate and can act as a buffer against extreme weather conditions.

This tour takes you to an adventure to find the birds specialties of the Amazon. One of the rarest birds in the Amazon rainforest is the Black-faced Cotinga. This bird is found in the eastern part of the Amazon and is known for its black plumage. It is a very shy bird and is often seen hiding in the understory of the forest. Other rare birds that can be found in the Amazon include the White-bellied Seedeater and the Black-tailed Tityra.
Other interesting birds are: Southern Caracaras, Plumbeous Kite, Screaming Piha, Greater Yellow Headed Vulture, Amazon kingfisher, Curl Crested Aracari, White Throated Toucan, Sunbittern, Blue Black Grasquit, Yellow Browed Sparrow, Chestnut-bellied Seed-Finch, Blue-gray Tanager, Silver-beaked tanager, Amazonian Antpitta, Ruddy Ground-Dove and more.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Puerto Maldonado – Transfer to Refugio Amazonas Lodge

This day you will start taking a flight to Puerto Maldonado, arriving at mid-day, your guide will meet you at the airport, and together you will be transferred to your first lodge located in the buffer zone of the Tambopata National Reserve, arriving around 14:30. Once we arrive at our lodge, the personnel will accommodate you in your room. Then, you will have a traditional Amazonian lunch. In the afternoon you will have a guided walk to the Amazon rainforest. A thirty-minute walk takes us to this 35-meter-tall scaffolding tower, which will add a whole new dimension to our Amazon bird photography experience: the forest canopy. From this vantage point, it is all about landscapes and mainly birds.

We will wait for a canopy mixed flock to appear. The mixed flock is mostly all about tanagers: Paradise Tanager, Green-and-gold Tanager, Flame-crested Tanager, Turquoise Tanager, Opal-rumped Tanager, and others. The tower also offers good opportunities for Cream-colored Woodpecker, Gilded Barbet, Plum-throated Cotinga, and Striolated Puffbird. Macaws and toucans are seen flying against the horizon, including the Chestnut-eared, Lettered, Emerald, Curl-crested aracaries, and Brown-banded Puffbird. We might see lonely raptors. This is your best chance for hawk-eagles and even harpy! Then, we will return to our lodge for dinner and a well-deserved rest.

Day 2: Macaws Clay Lick – Birding Full Day, trails, and Reserve Forest.

This morning, we will wake up very early to have our birding adventure traveling by boat upstream river and visiting one of the most beautiful places of the Amazon rainforest, the Macaws Clay Lick. In this place, hundreds of macaws and parrots gather each day to feed on minerals. We will have the chance to see dozens of large macaws feeding on the special sodium-rich clays of the riverbank. The Macaws clay lick probably attracts more large macaws than any other clay lick in the world and the sight of dozens of macaws taking flight is truly unforgettable. The details of our stopover will depend on the weather and the amount of macaw activity, as the birds don’t visit the clay lick when it is raining. We will spend the morning watching the multicolored spectacle created by the flocks of birds.

Then, we will return to the lodge to have a delicious lunch and take a small rest before our next activity, we will explore the forest through a trail that takes us very close to the river, the overlook trail, wherefrom a point we can watch the sunset.

We will have the option of taking a night walk through the jungle when most of the mammals are active and possible to see. Easier to find are frogs with shapes and sounds as strange as their natural stories.

The Birding Tambopata Amazon Tour exceeded my expectations! The organization was top-notch, from the airport pickup to the well-planned itinerary. I appreciated the small group size, which allowed for a more personalized experience. The diversity of bird species we encountered was astounding, and the lush beauty of the Amazon rainforest is something I will cherish forever. Just a tip: don’t forget to bring sunscreen and a good camera to capture the incredible sights!.
