Manu Birding Birdwatching Manu
An extraordinary birding adventure along the legendary Manu Road awaits you! This 10 days & 9 night birding tour, offers you a gateway to a world of avian wonders, where rare and endemic species abound. Prepare to be enchanted by the symphony of nature that remains in Manu. Day 1: Birding from Cusco, Acjanaco Pass toward Manu Road 3,400 meters
We depart early from Cusco and drive across the eastern Andes toward the Acjanaco Pass—the gateway to Manu. As we descend the gravel road, we begin our birding with a focus on high-elevation specialties. Targets include Mountain Cacique, Gray-breasted Mountain-Toucan, White-collared Jay, and Hooded Mountain-Tanager. We arrive by late afternoon at the Wayqecha Cloud Forest Lodge, surrounded by mossy forests and epiphyte-laden trees. Evening bird list and dinner.

Expected species: Barred Fruiteater, Scarlet-bellied Mountain-Tanager, Andean Guan, Puna Thistletail
Day 2-3 : Full days of birding around 2,000 m.
We explore trails around the lodge and bird along the road, which winds through pristine subtropical forest. Key species in this zone include Versicolored Barbet, White-crowned Tapaculo, Three-striped Warbler, and Golden-olive Woodpecker. Flocks can be surprisingly dense here, and we’ll take our time scanning the canopy and understory. After lunch, optional visit to a nearby hummingbird garden.
Overnight: Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge
Day 4-5: Morning visit to the Cock of the rock lek, birding the humid forest
After breakfast, we descend gradually into more diverse and humid forest. This stretch of the Manu Road is world-renowned for birding. We’ll stop frequently to observe flocks with Blue-banded Toucanet, Crimson-mantled Woodpecker, and Chestnut-breasted Wren. We’ll also visit a Cock-of-the-rock lek in the afternoon, where males display with brilliant plumage and calls.
Overnight: Manu Bio Lodge, Manu Endemic Lodge.
Expected species: Andean Cock-of-the-rock, Yungas Manakin, Slate-colored Grosbeak, Olive-backed Woodcreeper
Day 6-8: Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge to Foothill Rainforest (800–400 m)
Continuing our descent, we transition into the Amazonian foothills, reaching the Alto Madre de Dios River by mid-morning. A short boat ride takes us to Ecomanu Lodge, located in one of the most bird-rich environments on Earth. We’ll begin our lowland birding with species like Bluish-fronted Jacamar, Pavonine Quetzal, and Gilded Barbet. The evening may bring sightings of owls or potoos.
Overnight: Ecomanu Lodge
Expected species: Purplish Jay, Trogons, Tinamous, Buff-throated Woodcreeper, White-lored Euphonia.
Days 9: Manu Humingbird Quest Full Day
A bonus day to pursue specific target species, a sesion for hummingbird photography, enjoy slow birding through private bird feeders and blinds. Some of the hummingbirds we’ll see are the Booted-racket Tail, Wire-crested Thorntail, Many-spotted Hummingbird, Violet-fronted Brilliant, White-bellied Woodstar, and Long-tailed Sylph, Rufous-crested Coquette, Golden-tailed Sapphire, Blue-tailed Emerald, Black-eared Fairy and Amethyst Woodstar. In the afternoon we can explore the canopy towers for more floodplain specialties, or bamboo zones for rarities like White-cheeked Tody-Flycatcher or Rufous-vented Ground-Cuckoo.
Overnight: Cock of the Rock Lodge
Day 10: Cloud Forest Birding Drive & Return to Cusco
After a final morning drive along the Manu Road, gradually ascending through the cloud forest, we return to Cusco, arriving in the early evening.
