Join us on a thrilling birding adventure across southeastern Peru, where we’ll seek out some of the most extraordinary avian species the country has to offer. Our itinerary is thoughtfully designed to provide diverse habitats, rich ecosystems, and unique birdwatching opportunities that will excite both seasoned birders and newcomers alike.
Our journey begins in Lima, where we’ll spend a day birding at Pucusana and the Pantanos de Villa refuge, two prime locations that showcase the diverse avian life of Peru’s coastal wetlands. Next, we’ll travel to Cusco to discover the Sacred Valley, birding in magnificent locales like San Salvador and Huacarpay, where we can expect to see both fascinating species and breathtaking landscapes.
Our journey culminates in a six-day exploration along the Manu Road, an extraordinary route that winds through some of the most biodiverse areas on the planet. This section of the trip offers the chance to immerse ourselves in a range of habitats, from cloud forests to lowland rainforests, allowing for sightings of remarkable birds unique to this region. Day 1: Birding in Lima: Pucusana & Villa Wetlands
We will start with an early morning pickup as we set off toward Pucusana. Upon arrival, we will begin our exciting boat trip around Pucusana Bay, providing a unique opportunity to observe remarkable endemic species such as the Humboldt Penguin, Red-legged Cormorant, Inca Tern, Blackish Oystercatcher, Guanay Cormorant, Peruvian Pelican, and the exclusive Surf Cinclodes. Later, we will proceed to the Pantanos de Villa Wildlife Refuge, a vital habitat for migratory birds and local species. Here, you will have the chance to observe a variety of wetlands bird species. At midday, we will transfer you to a charming restaurant where you can indulge in exquisite Peruvian cuisine. We will continue the birding at Villa Wetlands and in the late afternoon we will return to Miraflores, leaving you in your hotel. Night in Lima.
Day 2: Lima – Cusco – Sacred Valley
Today you will flight from Lima to Cusco. We will go birding in the surroundings of Cusco by the Sacred Valley. Some target birds to look for including the endemic Parodi’s Hemispingus, Urubamba Antpitta & Red and White Antpitta. Hummingbirds like Sword-billed Hummingbird and Amethyst-throated Sunangel. Other birds we can find here include Green-and-White Hummingbird, Black-tailed Trainbearer, Green-tailed Trainbearer, Golden-billed Saltator, Andean Tinamou, Andean Flicker, Andean Goose, Chilean Flamingo, Andean Duck, Yellow-billed Pintail, Puna Teal, Rusty-fronted Canastero, and many more. Night in Urubamba Lodge.

Day 3: Birding San Salvador & Huacarpay Lake
An early departure will take us south of Cuzco to Huacarpay Lake. This famous lake near Cusco is good for wetland birds such as Plumbeous Rail, Puna Teal and Cinnamon Teal, Many-colored Rush-Tyrant, Yellow-billed Pintail and the beautiful endemic Bearded Mountaineer. Later continuing to the small village of San Salvador. Above this village it is possible to see several passerines such as Chestnut-breasted Mountain-Finch, Tufted Tit-Tyrant, Peruvian Sierra-Finch, Chiguanco Thrush and others. Higher up there is a small lagoon good for Giant Coot, Crested Duck, Andean Goose, Andean Gull and Andean Lapwing. We will return to Cuzco in the late afternoon. Overnight in Cusco.
Day 4: Birding drive to Manu Cloud Forest
We’ll start the day with an early departure towards the main Manu Road, looking for specialties like the Blue-banded Toucanet and Handsome Flycatcher. Other Manu birds at high elevation include the Puna Thistletail, Crowned Chat-Tyrant, Golden-collared Tanager, Trilling Tapaculo, Hooded Mountain Tanager, Gould’s Inca, Diademed Tapaculo, Plushcap, Yellow-billed Cacique, Fulvous Wren, Black-throated Tody-Tyrant and Tyrannine Woodcreeper, among many others.
On the way to our lodge, we may have a chance to spot the Rufous-capped Thornbill. We will spend the night in the cloud forest at an altitude of 1,400 meters, which is the ideal habitat for the Cock-of-the-rock. Night at the Cock-of-the-rock Lodge.

Day 5: Trogons, Quetzals & Tanagers
Today after breakfast we will be birding around the lodge and spending the whole day along the main birding spot along the Cloud forest searching for mixed flocks of Tanagers, Flycatchers, Barbet and some other species. This area provides a chance to find the endemics Masked Fruiteater and Creamy-bellied Antwren. Also, Blue-banded Toucanet, Ocellated Piculet, Golden-headed and Crested Quetzal. A night birding will provide us Lyre-tailed Nightjar, Band-Bellied Owl and Rufescent Screech-Owl is also a possibility.
Day 6-7: Birding Lower Manu Road
Today we will start with a visit to the famous lek of Cock-of-the-Rock where the orange males gather to show off for females passing After this spectacular show we will spend the morning on the lower part of the Manu Road where we’ll try for some very difficult endemics: Black-backed Tody-Flycatcher, Cerulean-capped Manakin, Peruvian Piedtail.
Lower down the Manu road two very rare Hummingbirds are easy to see Peruvian Piedtail and Rufous-webbed Brilliant. Also, we can see Many-spotted Hummingbird, Violet-fronted Brilliant, Booted Racket-Tail, Speckled Hummingbird, Fawn-breasted Brilliant, Wire-crested Thorntail, Wedge-billed Hummingbird and others, Additional species we can find include Lanceolated Monklet, Versicolored Barbet, Slaty Gnateater, Cinnamon-faced Tyrannulet, Black-backed Tody-Flycatcher, Deep-blue Flowerpiercer, Stripe-chested Antwren, Dot-winged Antwren and many more sometimes including the rare Buff-Tailed Sicklebill. Night birding will provide us Common Potoo, Tawny-bellied Screech-Owl, Black-banded Owl, and Ladder-tailed Nightjar.

Day 8: Birding Bambo Forest full day
There are some excellent bamboo species we will be looking for in the Bamboo forest including Peruvian Recurvebill, Rufous-headed Woodpecker, White-cheeked Tody-Flycatcher, Flammulated Bamboo-Tyrant, Large-headed Flatbill, Bamboo Tanager and many more. En route we will visit a feeding station for hummingbirds, where a variety of hummingbirds can be seen such as Gould’s Jewelfront, Koepcke’s Hermit, Rufous-crested Coquette, Wire-crested and Black-breasted Thorntail, White-tipped Sicklebill, Fork-tailed Woodnymph, Grey-breasted Sabrewing, Sapphire-spangled Emerald, Violet-headed Hummingbird and many tanagers such as Magpie Tanager and Masked Crimson Tanager. Afternoon back to Cloud Forest.
Day 9: Morning birding and transfer to Cusco
Today, after breakfast, we will take our birding car to begin our journey back to Cusco, stopping at additional birdwatching spots along the way. Arriving in Cusco, we will transfer you directly to the airport for your departure flight to Lima and any connecting flights.
