They will transfer you to your hotel in Cusco, where you can rest for the remainder of the day. In the evening, you will have a meeting with your guide to go over the activities outlined in your tour itinerary. Later, you will enjoy dinner at a nice restaurant. The next day, you will depart early (5:00 AM) for Huacarpay Lagoon. This initial activity will help you acclimatize for the upcoming days of your tour, so it’s important to rest early on your first day. Overnight in Cusco. Day 2: San Salvador & HuacarpayAn early start takes us south of Cuzco to Huacarpay Lake. This famous lake near Cusco is good for wetland birds such as Plumbeous Rail, Puna Teal and Cinnamon Teal, Many-coloured Rush-Tyrant Yellow-billed Pintail and the beautiful endemic Bearded Mountaineer. Later continuing to the small village of San Salvador. Above this village it is possible to see several passerines such as Chestnut-breasted Mountain-Finch, Tufted Tit-Tyrant, Peruvian Sierra-Finch, Chiguanco Thrush and others. Higher up there is a small lagoon good for Giant Coot, Crested Duck, Andean Goose, Andean Gull and Andean Lapwing. We will return to Cuzco in the late afternoon. Overnight in Cusco. Birding Manu Cusco Birds Day 3: Birding Drive to Manu cloud forestEarly departure to bird the main Manu Road and look for desired birds, including the endemic Parodi’s Hemispingus, Urubamba Antpitta & Red and White Antpitta. More manu birds at high elevation would be Puna Thistletail, Crowned Chat-Tyrant, Golden-collared Tanager, Trilling Tapaculo, Hooded Mountain Tanager, Gould’s Inca, Diademed Tapaculo, Plushcap, Yellow-billed Cacique, Fulvous Wren, Black-throated Tody-Tyrant, Tyrannine Woodcreeper and many more. On the way to our lodge, we have a chance to spot Rufous-capped Thornbill. We will spend the night in cloud forest in more temperate environment at 1400 meters of height, in the ideal habitat for the Cock of the rock. Day 4: Birding Manu Road, Cock-of-the-Rock lekLower down this road two very rare Hummingbirds are easy to see Peruvian Piedtail and Rufous-webbed Brilliant. Also, we can see Many-spotted Hummingbird, Violet-fronted Brilliant, Booted Racket-Tail, Speckled Hummingbird, Fawn-breasted Brilliant, Wire-crested Thorntail, Wedge-billed Hummingbird and others, sometimes including the rare Buff-Tailed Sicklebill and of course Andean Cock-of-the-Rocks are frequently seen in the area. In the afternoon we shall be visiting the famous lek of Cock-of-the-Rock where the orange males gather to show off for females passing. Night birding is usually slow, but we should see Lyre-tailed Nightjar, Band-Bellied Owl and Rufescent Screech-Owl. Manu National Park Day 5: Birding Bambo Forest and lower Manu RoadThere are some excellent bamboo patches near to explore at lower elevations. Additional species we shall be looking for here include Peruvian Recurvebill, Rufous-headed Woodpecker, White-cheeked Tody-Flycatcher, Flammulated Pygmy-Tyrant, Bamboo Antshrike, Rufous-breasted Piculet, Large-headed Flatbill, Dot-winged Antwren and many more. En route we will visit a feeding station for hummingbirds. A great variety of hummingbirds can be seen such as Gould’s Jewelfront, Koepcke’s Hermit, Rufous-crested Coquette, Wire-crested and Black-breasted Thorntail, White-tipped Sicklebill, Fork-tailed Woodnymph, Grey-breasted Sabrewing, Sapphire-spangled Emerald, Violet-headed Hummingbird and many tanagers such as Magpie Tanager and Masked Crimson Tanager. Manu Birding Cusco Birds Day 6: Birding in Cocha Machu Huasi, Antpittas and moreOn this day, we will start very early to observe the birds of the Amazon lowlands, including the Black-capped Tinamou, Rufous-vented Ground- Cuckoo, Black-spotted Bare-eye, Long-tailed Potoo, Amazonian Antpitta and Thrush-like Antpitta, Fiery-capped, Band-tailed and Round-tailed Manakin. We will be heading to Machu Huasi lagoon, a very special lagoon widely visited for its scenic beauty and its favorite habitat for waterfowls such as Hoatzin, Sunbittern, Horned Screamer, Pale-eyed Blackbird, Black-capped Donacobious, Sungrebe and Rufous-sided Crake. Day 7: Birding drive back to CuscoWe will continue our search for more birds as we climb up the cloud forest. On our way to Cusco, we will have another opportunity to observe the birds we missed, including the Red-and-White Antpitta and Rufous-capped Thornbill. It’s common to see flocks of Tanagers passing close by, which provides excellent opportunities for capturing photos. The flocks include Hooded Mountain-Tanager, Masked Flowerpiercer, Scarlet-bellied Mountain-Tanager, Streaked Tuftedcheek, Pearled Treerunner, and many more.
